ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF LOADING SUNFLOWER ON OTHER CROPS IN EGYPT
this research showed a large food gap in edible oils, ranging in recent years between (95-97%), which threatens national food security, and in light of the difficulty of increasing oil crops areas as a result of intense competition faced with other crops and the reluctance of farmers from planting more acute this problem, and is limited to the most important vegetable oils that are imported for consumption of food oil in Egypt such as the palm oil, sunflower oil and soybean oil, with a total imports value of 8833 million pounds on average for the period (2010-2013), representing about 90.6% of the total imports value of oils and fats estimated at 9749 million pounds. Palm oil comes in the first place among the most important vegetable oils that are imported amounted to about 42.8%, followed by imports of sunflower oil with a relative importance amounted to about 41.4%, and imports of soybean oil with a relative importance amounted to about 15.9%. It was also found that Egypt produces sunflower oil and soybean oil only and palm oil is not produced locally. Nearly half of Egypt's imports of vegetable oils are not be replaced by domestic production. Sun flower oil occupies the first place in imports of vegetable oils after exclusion of palm oil, and the content of high oil painting up to about 40-45%. Field Crops Research Institute depends on Sunflower crop toreduce the gap of vegetable oil in Egypt. It emerged from research that there are non-traditional ways to increase sunflower crop area and then increase domestic production of sunflower oil, which contributes to increased selfsufficiency of sunflower oil ratio, as well as lead to a decrease in the value of imports of sunflower oil, which contributes to reduce the pressure on Balance of Payments. The study of the current situation for the production of sunflower crop showed that the area reduced from about 4600 acres in 2001 to about 104 acres in 2013 with a rate of decrease amounted to about 97.7% which is statistically significant. Production reduced from about 4400 tons in 2001 to about 152 tons in 2013 at a rate of decrease amounted to about 96.5%. On the other hand, farm price increased of about 900 pounds / ton in 2001 turned out to about 3468 pounds / ton in 2013 with a rate of increase of 285.3%, as well as an increase rate in yield of 1944%.It was also found that the technical potential to increase sunflower area by loading it on tomato crops (summer and Nile), watermelon, cucumbers, in addition to newlyestablished orchids and sugar cane which could add about 413 000 acres of sunflower during the period (2010-2013). The results indicate that the seed produce is about 328 000 tons of seed which produces about 131 000 tons of oil. The results showed that the amount of sunflower oil started, as a result of loading, to increase self-sufficiency from about 3.6% in average rate for the period (2010-2013) to about 34%. It is also found that the added amount of the production of loaded sunflower oil can provide about 1239 million pounds of Egyptian imports of vegetable oils bill (except olive oil) amounting about 7297 million pounds.Recommendations 1. The state, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation to adapt a national project to increase the sunflower crop area vertically by downloading through: - Agricultural extension to raise awareness among farmers that the sunflower loading on some crops increases the net return per acre and does not affect the productivity of major crops. This is done through the use of extension fields scattered through provinces of the Republic - Field Crops Research Institute for the provision of oil sunflower seed guaranteed. - To encourage investment in the construction of extraction factories of vegetable oils and motivate existing plants to reactivate production lines and the private and investment sector factories not to rely on imported oil lines and re-packing only.
