Abstract
The main objectives of this study were to: determine the practices followed by soybean farmers to produce and market soybean, determine the reluctance reasons of some soybean farmers and their suggestions to encourage the expansion of the of this crop cultivation in the future. The data were collected from four villages as follows : Shubra bus village, Shibin el - Kom distract (Menoufia Governorate), Taruji village, Abu Elmatameer distract (Beheira Govemorate), Shanawih village, Nasser distract (Beni Suef Governorate), and the village of Bani Abid village, Abu Qeraas distract (Minya governorate). Focus group discussion method was used to interview farmers, during June 2006. The most important findings could be summarized as follows: -All farmers add bacterial vaccine to soybean seeds, but the majority of them add more nitrogen fertilizer. -The problems they are facing; non-availability of bacterial vaccine bags adequately during the cultivation period, shortage of irrigation water, Lack of a contractual cultivation, and increasing the nitrogen fertilizer doses. -The most important reasons of reluctance in cultivating soybean are as follows: low prices soybean, lack of marketing methods, lack of places for collecting crop, the absence of cooperative marketing, and low-value crop with the increase in the rental value of agricultural land, importing soybean from abroad, lack of information on crop marketing, insufficient irrigation water. - The most important farmers' suggestions to face the reasons of cultivation reluctance of soybean as follows: improve the sale price of the crop, provision of cooperative marketing, establishing-collection centers at the village level, providing contracts and the receipt of crop farmers, the reduction of import soybean, finding high productive varieties, provision of water-irrigation, and planning marketing programs to increase marketing information for soybean farmers. The study recommended taking these suggestions into consideration to encourage farmers to increase the cultivated area of soybean crop in the near future.
