Abstract
Separation and identification of cardamom volatile oil obtained by steam distillation were carried out by GC analysis and GC/MS. The fatty acids composition of cardamom fixed oil were also determined . The volatile and fated oils were tested for their antimicrobial activity against four different genera of pathogenic bacteria namely, Staphylococcus aureus, 8aaus ce-eu4 Escheridda oall and Salmonella typhimurium and two strains of spoilage fungi namely, Aspergillus nevus and Aspergillus odtraceus Cytotoxic and anticancer activities of the volatile oil were evaluated. As well as a comparative study of the anti- inflammatory activity of the cardamom volatile oil at a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight and the didofenace at a dose of 3mg/kg against acute carrageenan which induced rat hind paw odema was also performed. The obtained results revealed that volatile oil represents about 5% of the seed contents and 24 constituents were identified in the free volatile fiction from 55 separated components of total fractions. The major fractions of cardamom volatile oil given as area % were 1,8 • dneole (37.28 %), teminyl acetate (18.55 %) and endobomyl acetate (11.96 %) . It was also observed that volatile oil was rich in the oxygenated compounds and poor In ['imam hydrocarbons. The volatile oil of cardamom seeds was more effective on the inhibition of the growth of the microbial species examined than fixed oil. The inhibitory effect of volatile oil against same pathogenic fungi was increase as volatile oil concentration increased and had highly inhibitory effect on the selected pathogenic bacteria. So, it could be concluded that this study has a very important economic reflex as it was proved to be applicable, practicable and available to produce cardamom volatile oil which could be utilized as antimicrobial agents. Moreover, it had a highly cytotoxic and anticarcenogenic activities against human tumor WI lines. Besides the cardamom volatile oil had a noticeable effect as anti-inflammatory agent .
