Abstract
Data concerning certain performance traits were recorded for two native breeds (Fayoumi and Dandarawi), four local breeds (Dokki4, Golden Montazah, Gimmizah and Bandara) and a commercial breed (L.S.L), when fed a low-protein diet (13%) during the laying period. In order to throw some light on breed differences with respect to body weight gain, feed conversion and chick viability during rearing period, chicks were fed the same diet. Data concerning the previously mentioned traits were collected for all breeds up to twelve weeks of age. Results obtained showed that there were significant differences between breeds in average body weight and chick viability up to 12 weeks of age. Bandara chicks had the highest average body weight, and Dandarawi chicks recorded the lowest average body weight. In the same time, Dandarawi chicks were the most viable chicks (98.8%), while the Gimmizah chicks were the least viable chicks (94.6%). Rusults concerning the effect of feedling low-protein diet showed that : Dietary protein level had no significant effect on average age at sexual maturity for studied breeds except for Fayoumi layers where high protein level delayed average age at sexual maturity. However, low-protein diet delayed the age of sexual maturity for Bandara layers. There were significant breed differences in average egg number up to 70 weeks of age, where produced the highest number of eggs, and the Dandarawi produced the lowest numbers, regardless of protein level. When adjusting egg production to a fixed age at sexual maturity (22 weeks), rate of laying for pullets fed the low-protein diet could be descendingly ranked as follows : Bandara, Golden Montazah, L.S.L., Fayoumi, Gimmizah, Dokki4 and Dandarawi, while when fed the control diet they were ranked as : L.S.L., Fayoumi, Bandara, Gimmizah, Golden Montazah, Dokki4 and Dandarawi. The highest egg mass was recorded for L.S.L. fed the control
