Abstract

The tamarisk Jewel beetle Steraspis squamosa Klug (Coleoptera:Buprestidae) is a harmfull pest on tamarisk trees in Egypt. The larvae bore into the trunk and branches to feed inside the wood causing serious damage which lead to broken and dead hosts. The general description, behaviour and duration of different stages with annual generation were studied. The females deposit their eggs singly and the mean number per female was 53.9 ± 3.9 eggs and the hatchability of eggs averaged 56.1%. The pre-oviposition, oviposition, postoviposition, larval and pupal periods of the insect were 3.1 ± 0.31, 5.2 ± 0.41, 2.8 ± 0.25, 29.1 ± 0.56, 311.8 ± 2.1 and 26.8 ± 0.3 days, respectively. The longevity of adult male lasted 7-16 days whereas, the adult female lived about 8-15 days. Under laboratory conditions (24.5 °C and 61% R.H) this borer had one generation annually. The duration of generation lasted 367-397 days with an average of 380.2 ± 2.3 days .
