Abstract
This study was conducted in the Central Laboratory for Aquaculture Research (CZAR) during winter in two consecutive seasons (88/1989, 89/1990). Mean water temperature was measured at 9:00 in the morning (11.4°C and 11.4°C) during the first and the second seasons, respectively. Weight changes for common carp Cyprinus carpio, silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus were evaluated during winter months when commonly grown in eathen ponds. Weight gain for common carp was 21.33% and 33.25% during the first and the second seasons, respectively. Weight loss was detected for silver carp, and the average of weight loss was 1.16% during the first season, and 3.88% during the second season. The few tagged tilapia specimens recovered in the second season showed weight gain. The data suggest the possibility of the extension of production season to include a part or all winter months in Egypt, as well as in regions with similar climates whenever common carp is a major fish species in the culture system.
