Abstract

lntercropping cowpea Vigna unguiculata with cotton Gossypium barbadense wad used as a cultural method to decrease target pests of cotton. Planting cotton with cowpea reduced infestation of cotton by aphid, Aphis gossypii (Glover) and Jassid , Empoasca decipiens (Pasli). lntercropping cowpea with cotton had no effect on the population number of the whiten)/ Bemisia tabaci (Genn.), the spider mite Tetranychus urticae (Koch) and the pink bollworm Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders).(The extent of insect damage depended upon the interaction between the date of sowing and the cropping method. Interplanting cowpea 4and 6 weeks after cotton planting showed the same trend of infestation observed on cotton when was planted with cowpea at the same time . Planting cowpea after 6 weeks from cotton planting had resulted in the build -up of the population of aphids, jassids and whitefly. However, the population of mite was reduced.
